As we’ve talked about in previous articles, college is a time of major change. Sometimes, that change can lead to emotional imbalance and even “College Depression”.
But what do you do about the everyday struggles that come up, like shyness, fears, and situations that test your worldviews? While these aren’t always large scale emotions that cripple our ability to function, they do prevent us from experiencing things fully.
If you want to get the most out of your college experience, it’s time to face those small obstacles head on.
ADDRESSING SHYNESS AND FEARS
How did you feel your first day in your new dorm or the anxiety of getting to the dorm that first day? What were you thinking about when you sat in your first lecture? Odds are you felt a combination of shyness (“I don’t know what to say to my new roommate!”) and/or fear (“What if no one wants to sit next to me? What if I fail this class?”). These are entirely normal experiences and emotions, but it’s important to recognize those emotions for what they are: limiting.
If you’d like to not be limited, you’ll need to apply the truest version of yourself to your new experience. This means branching out a little, being brave, and reversing negative thoughts. To stay balanced even when your emotions seem all over the place, why not try to:
Start a conversation with someone first. You are not the only one experiencing shyness and fear in college! Remember that when you see someone standing alone or sitting in the mess hall.
Take a class that scares you a little bit. Do you avoid public speaking? Are you freaked out at the thought of dissecting frogs in biology? Take a class that seems a little out of your comfort zone. By controlling the new situations you encounter, you’ll see that you are more capable than you know!
Give yourself some quiet time. College can be loud and overwhelming. From classes to roommates to parties and even jobs, you’ll be around people a lot. This can be draining, so give yourself downtime alone. Your mind will thank you for it.
